Sales Engineer

MPC Consulting is currently recruiting for a Sales Engineer who will be responsible for establishing new customers and maintaining existing customers in a variety of industries; to increase market share and to help maintain the company as a leader in Control Systems, SCADA and Instrumentation business.  The Sales Engineer will use their technical knowledge to explain the various products and services provided by the company, and promote our design/build capabilities.  The position will develop, execute and manage the company’s overall marketing strategies and will perform the sales effort.  The Sales Engineer reports directly to the President and represents the company’s position on project requirements in technical meetings.  The position is also responsible for preparing proposals, estimates and quotes.  Applicants must posses a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and 3 years directly related experience or Technology Diploma in Electronics or Instrumentation and 5 years directly related experience.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES AND DELIVERABLES

Sales

  • Performs presentations to potential and existing clients, articulating the value proposition of product / solution / service offerings;
  • Pursues long-term account strategy that maximizes profits;
  • Cultivates long-term relationships with the appropriate key account decision makers;
  • Initiates potential customer contact by cold calling, or through referrals or other leads;
  • Assists customers to determine which products or services best fit their needs and advises customers on how to make the best use of the products or services provided;
  • Prepares proposals including preparing quotes for public tender jobs;
  • Helps to solve any problems that may come up once a piece of equipment has been installed;
  • Serves as a link between the customer and the company;
  • May collaborate with engineering when preparing proposals or quotes;
  • Presents a clear understanding of business cycles, enterprise management, sales and marketing initiatives as they relate to our core services;
  • Achieves and/or exceeds sales targets on a quarterly basis;
  • Grows new customer base by generating new business prospects and close sales.

Marketing

  • Develops and manages the campaign to find new client markets;
  • Utilizes technical strengths, marketing and product management experience to generate sales opportunities;
  • Establishes and executes the company marketing plan;
  • Provides management with suggestions for improving volume, market share and price levels;
  • Develops and delivers successful marketing communication strategies;
  • Researches, organizes and ensures company participation at appropriate trade shows, conferences, seminars;
  • Develops and implements plans for strategic accounts that exceed expectations in revenue retention/growth, account profitability, and customer satisfaction/loyalty.

Other

  • Assist in editing and updating the company website by writing and introducing new materials, newsletters, product information, etc;
  • Conducts direct mail/e-mail and advertising campaigns including creating and placing advertising; and website editing and management;
  • Creates and conducts customer surveys to obtain marketing information about the company’s products and services.
  • Develops and maintains a campaign to promote the company on the Internet

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

  • Manage the marketing and sales budget

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT

  • Computer for word processing, electronic mail, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.;
  • Software includes:  Maximizer, Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint;
  • Standard office equipment such as: facsimile, photocopiers, cell phone, audio visual equipment;

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Office environment and customer sites;
  • Travel to attend conferences and seminars as a vendor; meet with potential clients or existing client etc.;
  • May be required to work evenings and weekends;
  • Speaks publicly and makes presentations to groups of various sizes.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and  3 years directly related experience, OR
  • Technology Diploma in Electronics or Instrumentation and 5 years directly related experience;
  • Experience developing and executing marketing strategies and objectives; 
  • Experience determining potential customers;
  • Experience preparing quotes, writing proposals and making presentations;
  • Experience in sales or in a technical occupation related to the products/ services;
  • A combination of experience with Control Systems, SCADA Systems, Instrumentation and PLCs is highly preferred;
  • Experience cold calling and developing territory as well as maintain existing relationships;
  • Valid BC Driver’s Licence and own vehicle.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of CSA Standards;
  • Knowledge of Canadian Electrical Code;
  • Knowledge of project management skills;
  • Evaluation and negotiations skills;
  • Ability to prepare reports, presentations and utilize internet search programs and tools;
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify significant issues, and develop recommendations that assist in decision making;
  • Ability to use collaborative decision making skills, ensuring that decisions are made and that they are aligned with strategic directions;
  • Ability to research potential companies, contact key personnel, set up appointments;
  • Ability to make initial contact for pre-qualification of leads for the purpose of generating sales;
  • Ability to plan special events and trade show participation;
  • Ability to conduct customer surveys to obtain marketing information about organization products and services;
  • Ability to plan, prepare and deliver effective written information and make verbal and visual presentations to customers;
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and compare competitor data and pricing to that of the organization;
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to specify and procure items such as MCC’s, motors, VFD;
  • Ability to create tender packages;
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret electrical schematic drawings;
  • Ability to gather, interpret and analyze technical information in order to verify conclusions and provide advice and recommendations to customers or staff;
  • Ability to positively present the company’s position on project requirements in technical meetings;
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and produce results with limited resources;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and clients;
  • Ability to provide concise and accurate information orally and in writing, including reports, presentations and correspondence;
  • Ability to exercise tact, judgment, discretion, confidentiality and flexibility in sales and marketing delivery;
  • Ability to conduct research on new customers and markets;
  • Ability to use software applications such as MS-Word, MS-Excel, PowerPoint;
