Building Management Systems Specialist

MPC Consulting is currently recruiting a Building Management Systems Specialist with a minimum of 15 years experience to specify, design, program, configure and commission Building Management Systems ranging from chiller sequences to full building control systems.

Education and Experience

  • Engineering degree and PEng designation;
  • Minimum 15 years application engineering experience (designing and programming HVAC control systems, chiller controls etc.), OR
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience working with and thorough knowledge of  Honeywell Enterprise Buildings Integrator (EBI) building management system;
  • Experience in the integration of low voltage building sub-systems using various industry protocols (i.e. LON, BacNet, etc);
  • Experience with HVAC and/or “hands-on” Direct Digital Control (DDC) and temperature control;
  • Experience in DDC Programming and DDC commissioning;
  • Integration experience with BACnet, Modbus and LON protocols preferred;
  • Experience managing large projects an asset;
  • Valid BC Driver’s License;
  • Valid passport;
  • Must be authorized to work in Canada.

Specific Accountabilities and Deliverables

  • Creates specifications for building management systems;
  • Reviews and upgrades existing specifications;
  • Acts as a technical resource;
  • Designs building control systems including DDC controller systems; creating control drawings, valve sizing, damper sizing and schedules;
  • Prepares submittals per engineering standards;
  • Reviews submittals and lead team to obtain hardware submittal approval;
  • Designs building automation systems for standard and/or critical environment facilities such as data centers, laboratories, or hospitals;
  • Creates unique design solutions to meet specific customer requirements;
  • Designs building automation systems for large and/or complex buildings consisting of mechanical system layouts, electrical drawings, bill of materials, sequence of operations, valve and damper schedules, DDC panel layouts to meet the intent of the project plans, specifications and contract documents.
  • Designs mainly large complex building automation network architecture to support operator workstations, DDC field panels, third-party integration devices connected through LON, Ethernet, Siemens P2 or BACNET.
  • Analyzes plans, construction contract specifications and codes to determine project requirements and risks.  
  • Generates DDC point database;  
  • Provides start-up and checkout documentation to the Project Manager and system specialist for use in commissioning and validation;
  • Oversees the creation of system graphics;
  • Reviews detailed designs submitted by design/build contractors to ensure they meet tender specifications;
  • Fosters and maintains positive working relationships with the supervisor, staff and customers;
  • National and international travel to site locations is required.

  • Thorough knowledge of industry engineering fundamentals and business operations required.
  • Proficiency in programming, job start-up, checkout, and troubleshooting required.

  • Thorough knowledge of OPC, Profibus, Bacnet, Microsoft operating systems MS2003, 2008, ODBC databases, SQL;
  • Thorough knowledge of heat transfer and fluid flow and the application of mechanical devices used for delivery of ventilation, steam, chilled water, hot water, and humidification.
  • Thorough knowledge of instrumentation and calibration techniques 
  • Thorough knowledge of air and water balance procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office products;
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD;
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills;
  • Advanced critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making skills;
  • Superior planning, organizing and project management skills;
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with co-workers and customers;
  • Ability to present complex ideas, both verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner;
  • Ability to organize work load, set priorities, and manage multiple concurrent projects and deadlines;
  • Ability to prepare and provide clear, concise and complete verbal and written (including reports, presentations and correspondence) information at a level appropriate to the audience
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, flow charts, schematic, and ladder diagrams, and control sequences, which may also involve various software languages and formats.
